Newport Pagnell Town U12 Swans vs Biggleswade Jaguars Girls
Our return league fixture with our friends Bigglewade Jaguars
This time out we played at Broughton playing fields in a hastily rearranged venue following a spate of really poor weather that had left the Newport pitches in terrible condition.
So with thanks to the City Belles we played on their pitch. It was bitterly cold morning with enough of a breeze to bring the wind chill factor down significantly. It was colder than Stotfold!!
We started the game brightly with relentless pressure in the first ten minutes. Daisy, playing up front, broke quickly and saw her shot saved by the Biggleswade keeper. We also saw several very quick crosses put in to the Biggleswade box but nothing came of them. Good football though and good chance to for the Swans to express themselves. The ball was moved around quickly just on the 10 minutes mark and with some great passing the ball found its way to Daisy, she moved the ball to Zara who took the opportunity of a quick shot and smashed it in for 1-0. Great play all round!
We took the chance to make a few subs and with Evie coming on for Tia we quickly saw Evie take a shot at goal, which took a cruel deflection and ended up in the back of the net. 2-0. What was impressive was the interplay beforehand with a throw-in from Mia played to Zara and then back again, a quick ball into space saw Ava pick it up and put Evie through for the shot. A brilliant piece of interplay with a just reward at the end.
We continued in the same vein with lots of attacking pressure and moving the ball around well, in a strengthening wind, also getting colder! On 17 minutes Scarlett was put clean through and with only the keeper to beat she saw her shot saved for a corner. Again a couple of minutes later with more great inter changes saw Scarlett pass to Zara who also saw her shot saved and go for a corner. Just a few seconds later saw Mel this tie break forward and take a shot, yet another save though. Evie, also playing really well since coming on had the ball at her feet and played in a delightful cross only to be intercepted by the goal keeper with a great catch. Then, just before half time, Mel played the ball out to the left where she found Scarlett and with a drive to the box and a great shot saw us 3-0 up. Great half for the swans!
The second half kicked off and with a really strong wind the weather hampered the play for both teams. Both were struggling to get control of the ball and a 20 minute spell of play in the middle with both teams competing well saw few opportunities. 50 minutes in saw the swans awarded an indirect free kick in the Biggleswade box. Never having practiced this, made the decision making interesting! With the ball at Scarlett’s feet and Zara, having just come on a as a sub, just 5 metres away the ball was played to her and with a smash of the ball of her right foot she put it into the roof of the net for 4-0. Now we had something a little different to do. Under the Beds FA guidelines we reduced our team to eight players with Zara coming off, having been on the pitch for 90 seconds.
For the last 10 minutes we played 8 v 9 and with the teams now matching each other to the end we finished with 4-0 score line.
Player of the Match was awarded to Scarlett for her goal, assist and play down the wings.
Well done for a good game to Biggleswade, whose manager also commented on his admiration for the way the Swans play football and how his team can learn so much from them. Praise indeed!
