Jags through to the County Cup Quarter Finals
…after a decisive 2nd half performance
The U12 Jags moved through to the quarter-finals of the U13s County Cup, with victory over Tattenhoe Reds. Although running out 4-1 winners, the first half saw an uncharacteristically scrappy performance by the Jags, against a determined and physical Tattenhoe side, who also had considerable pace up front. There were some good individual performances, but much of the usual Jags passing football was absent so, as a team, the boys struggled to stamp their authority on the game. Hitting the woodwork, but with no follow-up, a good chance went astray and it was ultimately a penalty that allowed the Jags to move ahead, as Dylan himself converted after being brought down in the box. However, then conceding a soft goal, the Jags went in 1-1 at half-time with the final outcome far from certain …and some inevitable concern among the 30 strong Jags support. The break was a welcome opportunity for coaches to remind the boys about the style that had brought so much success this year and the need for much greater urgency. There followed a decidedly brighter start to the 2nd half and, somewhat reflecting the physical challenge of the opposition, a second penalty was awarded, which was successfully put away by skipper Sam. With a lead restored and a much improved performance, the Jags increasingly dominated, with consistent pressure in and around the opposition box forcing an own-goal and a deserved 3-1 lead. Increasingly in charge, the Jags were then rarely out of the visitors’ half during the 4th quarter and Leo scored an excellent long range strike to seal a 4-1 win. Credit to Tattenhoe, who certainly proved awkward opposition and, particularly during the first half, were very busy opponents who looked dangerous. It was only as the more familiar Jags emerged in the 2nd half that the game looked safe. Cup runs rarely prove plain sailing but, after a below par 1st half, the Jags nevertheless ultimately came through and certainly did enough to merit their place among the last 8 of the competition. With a very solid display, Luca was named Man of the Match, while Seo took the award for Jags Player of the Month. #COYG.
