Newport Claim Victory in a Scrappy Affair

Newport arrived at Canal Street with high hopes of continuing their good recent form against a St Andrews side that were fighting for their lives at the wrong end of the table. Newport dominated possession for the opening fifteen minutes, although they struggled to turn their dominance into chances on the heavy pitch. St Andrews had set themselves up to frustrate the Swans and as their confidence grew they looked to punish the visitors on the break, they had the first chance of the game but were foiled by a good Damon Herbert clearance. Newport tried to expose the home defence with pace but all too often were caught offside. A goal moth melee on the half hour mark saw Stuart Smeathers getting a foot to the ball to clear the danger as Newport realised they were in for a tough battle. Shortly before the break Sam O’Neill beat the offside trap to collect Josh Winters’ through ball, he was denied by Robert Peet who was quick to come out to save the shot and take the teams in level at the break.

Newport moved up a gear for the first fifteen minutes after the break as they had their best period of the game. The half started with the best move of the game, Winters released Harry Stratton who beat his marker before playing the ball across the area, O'Neill laid the ball back for Greg Ling who fired a hard-low shot into the bottom corner for the only goal of the match. Two minutes later Stratton fed the ball to Taylor Orosz, his touch over the keeper went narrowly wide. Orosz had another good chance when he stung Peet’s fingers with a shot that the keeper failed to hold first time before he claimed the ball. The final chance of the game came with half an hour remaining when O'Neill and Luke Emery combined well only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle. St Andrews made a double substitution to strengthen up their midfield and further frustrate Newport who had struggled to get their passing game going all afternoon, this was a scrappy, hard fought game in which the only real moment of quality won the match.
