Doughboys Blitzed by Rampant Swans

Newport could not have asked for a better start to the game against Wellingborough as they looked to continue their good league form. Luke Emery came close in the opening exchanges shooting over from the edge of the area, however, the Doughboys reprieve was short lived. In the eighth minute Emery won the ball in midfield and played Harry Stratton into space on the left flank, Stratton provided the perfect centre for Fazel Koriya to head in the opening goal of the game. The second came within a minute after Greg Ling won the ball from the kick off and released Taylor Orosz with a beautifully weighted through ball, Orosz cut in past his marker and rifled a hard, low shot past Jack Riley to double the Swan's lead. After sixteen minutes the Swans were at it again, this time Stratton released Josh Winters from the half way line, Winters took the ball on to score the host's third with a fine finish. The visitors had a half chance to pull one back when Carlos Lewis found himself in the clear after rounding Mark Osborn, his shot was comfortably cleared by Damon Herbert. Newport went very close to extending their lead when Orosz forced a good save out of Riley as the Swans stepped up the pressure. In the twenty-sixth minute Ling slipped the ball through to Emery, his first shot was blocked but he made no mistake with the follow up. Three minutes later Dave Baker got on the scoresheet, powerfully heading home Koriya's corner to make it five nil. With ten minutes remaining in the half Orosz and Koriya played a sublime one-two that saw Orosz hit the post with his shot.

Newport came out for the second period as if they still had everything to prove and within a minute they cut through the Wellingborough defence after good work by Adam Pryke found Winters who in turn found Emery who slotted home his second of the game. The Swans completed their scoring in the fiftieth minute when Koriya squared the ball for Orosz to tap home the seventh. Wellingborough came close when Lloyd Buckby’s free kick from the centre of the park reached Aynsley McDonald who headed wide with the goal beckoning. Koriya looked to extend the lead further when he broke free to be one on one with the keeper, he knocked the ball past Riley but Joe Rich provided cover to clear the goal bound shot. The Doughboys finally got a consolation goal with nine minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty, Mark Pryor stepped up to calmly side foot the spot kick in to the net. Wellingborough’s heads never dropped but they were simply blown away by Newport’s display in the first half hour of the game in what was a truly superb exhibition of skill, pace and clinical finishing.
