Godmanchester Rovers 2-0 Newport Pagnell Town
Emirates FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round
11th August 2018 Attendance 103
Newport travelled to Bearscroft Lane in search of cup glory against Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division leaders Godmanchester Rovers. The Swans started well on a dry, hard surface and had the bulk of possession in the opening exchanges. Godmanchester, for their part, were happy to sit back, soak up the pressure whilst trying to counter with long balls to Jack Chandler on the wing. Chances were few and far between until the final ten minutes of the half when Tom Liversedge skillfully slipped the ball through to Fazel Koriya who agonisingly found the crossbar after delicately lobbing the advancing Niall Conroy in the host's goal. Matty Allan placed a header wide of the post with the home team's best effort of the half.
Newport came close again shortly after the restart when Harry Stratton's 25 yard free kick forced a good diving save out of Conroy. It was Rovers who snatched the lead in the 61st minute when Joe Furness converted a penalty. With their noses in front Godmanchester took control of the game, however, they created few clear cut chances until Chandler was denied by Mark Osborn. They finally managed to kill the tie off in the 82nd minute after Matty Allan drove down the left flank before cutting back inside to slot the ball home to double the lead and put his team through to the next round and an all ECL Prem tie against Thetford Town.
