Bracknell 12 - All Whites 67
Newton Abbot “All Whites” made a stunning start to the new season when racking up nearly a point a minute in the first half before going on to complete a 10-try to 2 victory at Bracknell.
Full back Rob Avery-Wright
pointed the visitors in the right direction with an early penalty before winger Max Snowdon
finished off a spell of interplay between the backs and the forwards with a try.
Next over was flanker Josh Vickridge
, who marked his return to Newton’s first team with an “under the posts” try following a break by centre Matt Jess
. The former Chiefs player then beat three defenders to score himself.
Jess’s co-centre, Kevin Dennis
, crossed on the end of a 50 metre run, before Jess scored his second after a run down the wing from the half-way line.
Bracknell got on the scoreboard just before the turn with a corner try from their Tongan and former London Irish number 8 Christopher Halaufia.
The “All Whites” soon stretched further ahead; a charge down by skipper Dean Avery
paved the way for a try for Luke Mingo
. The second rower was followed over by replacement prop Matt Dowrick.
The home side gained a little ground with a short range try from prop Nick Ovens who concluded a rolling maul routine.
However, Newton soon put this small set-back behind them; Kyle Browne
went in for a long range try on the end of an Ollie Avery-Wright
pass and the Devon side rounded off with a catch and drive touchdown credited to hooker Avery.
The kicking duties were taken care of by the Avery-Wright brothers, Rob and Ollie.
For now the “All Whites” sit top of the League in South West Premier – formerly National Three South and West. Saturday, Weston-super-Mare are welcomed to Rackerhayes for a 2.30pm kick off.
The Somerset-based side are back at this level thanks to a dominant season in South West One where they were unbeaten champions. In their opening match they drew 21-all at home with Brixham, the visitors levellng with their seventh penalty which was the last kick of the match.
