Newton Abbot 64 – Cleve 31

Whites win with flair after a great comeback.

The undoubted star of Newton Abbot “All Whites” fourth bonus point win was winger Kyle Browne. The elusive speedster banked six tries in the 70 minutes he was on the pitch, a yellow card meant he had an enforced 10 minute break.
Although the winning margin was convincing, the home side had to work hard against the Bristol based visitors who overcame a 19-nil deficit to lead 21-19 at the break before being run off the park in the second half.
Browne put his side in front as early as the third minute; No. 8 Jarryd Harris, along with centres Kevin Dennis and Matt Jess made the hard yards, the forwards delivered second phase ball that was shipped out to Browne who reached between two defenders to dot down.
Full-back Rob Avery-Wright added the extras and within minutes he was back in the action providing the pass to put prop Lloyd Radford in for a try that was turned into full value for a 14-nil lead inside 10 minutes.
It was then Cleve’s turn to go on the attack, but Newton kept their line intact and struck from near halfway for their third. Swift lineout ball was moved to Browne who cut a great line through the Cleve defence to send Jess in for a try on 25 minutes.
Newton then lost their way in the spell up to half time with Cleve taking full advantage of the disruption in the home ranks. Firstly, Radford went off injured, Browne then received a yellow for a high tackle that also cost a penalty try and lastly scrum half Luke Kenny joined Radford on the side lines.
Cleve’s opening 7 pointer was bolstered by a pair of tries from centre Joseph Hall as the visitors demonstrated how dangerous they could be. With full back Nathan Huntley slotting both conversions Cleve went into the break 21-19 to the good.
The opening of the second half was a cagey affair, but once Newton got back in front in the fiftieth minute there was no stopping the home side.
Browne couldn’t be kept out of the game; two miss passes sent the flyer down the touchline, when he was stopped the forwards recycled and Harris showed his strength to power over from 20 metres.
Rob Avery-Wright converted the bonus point try.
Eight minutes later replacement full-back Cameron Fogden dealt well with a Cleve cross- kick and found support from Browne who pirouetted out of the first tackle and was soon in behind the Cleve defence for his second.
In the last quarter, Newton went on to more than double their score. Jess pounced on a loose ball after a Cleve handling error and raced in from 40 metres for an under the posts score.
Browne then went to town; he got on the end of a Rob Avery-Wright cross-kick to complete his hat trick; his fourth was from a driven lineout and neat interplay by the centre pairing, he got behind the Cleve defence again for his fifth and number six saw him finishing off a long range three-quarter move.
Cleve weren’t totally passive as they scored tries through fly-half Nathan Huntley and prop Jean-Louis Bartlett, whose touchdown concluded the action.
Newton’s 10 tries were bolstered by seven conversions, six from Rob Avery-Wright and one from his brother Ollie.
Following Exmouth’s first defeat at Maidenhead, the “All Whites” and Dings – who are Newton’s opponents in Bristol on Saturday – are the only unbeaten sides in the division. Following the trip to Dings, Newton will play their first Devon derby of the six scheduled when they welcome Exmouth to Rackerhayes.
The home action tomorrow is provided by the Spartans who entertain Paignton Seconds in a Devon Merit One match that gets under way at 2.30pm.
The Colts are in derby action at Torquay.

Apart from the 1st XV’s spectacular win in a match that saw nearly 100 points scored, there was good news for the Spartans and Colts who both won tight games.
Crediton Seconds provided tough opposition for the Spartans who eventually prevailed 31-24. Each side scored four tries but the superior kicking of Newton’s Jack Sweeney swung the result in favour of the visitors. Half-backs Jake Monnington and Lewis Vicary each scored tries as did flanker Rob Palmer.
Sweeney converted all three, scored a self-converted try and landed a penalty as well. The Spartans sit at the top of Devon Merit One with a maximum return from their four games.
The Colts were also in four-try mode when recording their first win of the season on Homers Lane. Visiting Plymouth Albion Oaks were beaten 20-19 with their three tries and two conversions not quite enough. Newton’s tries were touched down by full back Henry Bunclark, flanker Joe Wood and Joel Broadhurst who came off the bench to score twice.
