Own Go Top!
On Saturday, Mens Own entertained St. Ives in the top of the table clash. Going into the game both teams had an impressive 100% record.
Own suffered a blow minutes before kick off as influential flanker James Barnwell was ruled out with a knee injury, this meant Rob Huckle was handed his 1st XV debut.
Own won the toss & started the match with a strong wind at their backs. Despite the wind, it was the visitors who had the better of the early exchanges but Own's defence held firm and stopped the wave after wave of St Ives attacks.
After 25 minutes and somewhat against the run of play Own scored the 1st try of the match, when Marc Simmons capitalised on a poor clearance kick to score under the posts & Matt Brace converted.
7 minutes later Own doubles the score when Captain Ian Evans drove over, again Brace converted.
Brace missed with a difficult penalty attempt before landing a long range effort on 39 minutes to send Own 17-0 up at half time.
Own kicked off the 2nd half & like St. Ives in the 1st half they started in control & following a lineout catch & drive hooker Craig Wilson scored. Brace was again successful with the conversion.
The try kicked St. Ives into action & they responded 4 minutes later with a converted try of their own. The game continued to ebb & flow until the 65 minute when St. Ives cut the deficit further with a penalty.
This did not deter Own & their 4th & the bonus point try when Steve Ennew drove over following a scrum won against the head. Brace missed the conversion but it didn't matter as the game finished 29-10 to Mens Own.
This was a fine performance from Mens Own against a big & well drilled St. Ives team. Everybody involved played well but Marc Simmons looked dangerous every time he got the ball & he was awarded the Man of the Match award.
Personally, I would like to thank the 4 replacements who weren't used during the game for their understanding & commitment!
Next week Own travel to St. Neots in the league, 2:15 KO.
