North Bay Victorious in Championship Battle
North Bay Boys and Girls Sweep the MD State Championship
A high level of intensity could be felt as soon as this match between rivals began. The large Exiles players pushed down the pitch and came close to scoring early in the match, but in time, North Bay turned the momentum around and through passing, rucking, and kicking, the ball was moved in their favor. Finally, late in the half, a pass from senior scrum half David Fetcho sent senior flyhallf Bobby Zvitkovitz running into the try zone and centering the ball for the first try of the match. Zvitkovitz converted the try, but early in the second half, the Exiles answered to even up the score. Bobby Zvitkovitz, the team's backs captain, completed a penalty kick to take the lead, but the lead changed when an unconverted try by the Exiles put them ahead 12-10.
North Bay players only increased their efforts and played with a passion that could not be stopped. Player after player pounded their way into the Exiles' defense, including runs by dynamic junior Jon Brown and mighty senior Christian Jagdman. After senior Connor Powell ran up the middle only to be brought down by a high-tackle, senior Nathan Newell powered into the Exiles pack and then Fetcho placed a perfect pass to Zvitkovitz who sent the ball to senior fullback Arthur Jackson for a try in the right corner. Shortly after that, speedy junior Justin Brownell flew past his opponents and scored in the left corner. Zvitkovitz was able to convert both of those tries with kicks from far out on each side, bringing the points total to where it stopped at 24-12. Notable defensive plays were executed by senior forwards-captain Matthew Bradley whose well-trained team often stopped the Exiles' mauls, won rucks and doubled-up on tackles to prevent the Exiles from scoring again. Connor Powell's speed, size and and strength were used effectively to stop any runs the Exiles started on the outside, and North Bay was able to hold up an attempted try by the Exiles as well. Another unequaled force on North Bay's side was senior Collin Ghear who, when lifted during line-outs, could not be beat. A post-game celebration was shared with the whole North Bay family, including coaches, former players, and the state-champion girls' team.
