NEW RAVENS RLFC 24 BIRMINGHAM BULLDOGS 14
Ravens show that Bulldogs bark is worse than its bite as they soar to 1st win of the season in a clinical team performance with an immense defensive effort.
The new season was only 2 minutes old when Brad Sinclair spotted a gap and sprinted through for the 1st try which was ably converted by Dave Wimbury. The Bulldogs hit back within minutes to score a try wide out and this had all the signs of been a high scoring game with both teams showing exceptional ball skills, but the man in the middle had other ideas and was keen to show his authority on the game as he next 20 was a succession of penalties for both sides making it into a bit stop start. Both defences were showing that neither side was going to give an inch as both teams were trying to find ways to break the others defences when on 2 occasions Birmingham looked like scoring only to be stopped in their tracks with some solid tackling from the Ravens notably when one of the Bulldogs thought he a had clear run for the line but Arran Warburton and Dave Swaysland had other ideas as one took him round the top and the other took his legs. Half time came with NEW Ravens holding a slender 2pt lead to play uphill 2nd half.
2nd half started exactly like the 1st one with a try to the Ravens in the opening 2 minutes as Richard Whitehouse chipped over the Bulldogs defence then re-gathered the ball to go over for a try showing that he has lost none of his footballing brain which was converted by Dave Wimbury.
As in the 1st half Bulldogs were to hit back fairly quickly with a try of their own which came from a rare Ravens error which was converted to bring them back within 2 points. Dave Swaysland was next one to trouble the scorers as he spotted a gap open on the last tackle of the phase to dive from yards out again converted by Dave Wimbury to make it 18 -10. The Ravens showed immense defence as they defended 3 consecutive sets of 6 tackles on their own line as they were getting penalised from been too quick off the mark and were issued a team warning on the 3rd occasion.
Brad Sinclair was over again in the corner for his 2nd try of the game as Ravens kept digging at the bulldogs defence but conversion was missed.
After some sustained Ravens attack up field, they were awarded a penalty 40 metres in front of the posts and the call went out from the bench to go for the 2 as this would then mean that Bulldogs would be 3 scores behind and with only 5 minutes left on the clock, Dave Wimbury struck it clean through the posts.
The Bulldogs had never given all game and managed to score a try with 2 minutes to go.
Final score was NEW Ravens 24 Birmingham Bulldogs 14 giving the Ravens a great start to the season which is just reward for the great preseason they have had. Every player stood out today in this win as they all stood up to be counted and never took a backward step
