OLLY’s STORY

Olly James Thomas Blackford was born at St Michael's Hospital, Bristol on 14th January 2011 at 9:09pm, weighing in at 6lb 15oz and is the youngest of three children of Emily and Jim Blackford.

Sadly, Olly was born with Complex Congenital Heart Defects, some of which were diagnosed during pregnancy. Here are the CHD'S that Olly has...

Double Inlet Left Ventricle (DILV): This is where you have a large left ventricle (the pumping chamber of the heart that supplies the body with blood), and a small right ventricle (the pumping chamber that supplies the Lungs with blood).

Two AV Valves in Double Inlet Left Ventricle

Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA): The two major vessels that carry blood away from the heart -- the aorta and the pulmonary artery -- are switched (transposed).

Pulmonary Stenosis : Narrowing of the Pulmonary Artery.

A Large VSD : A hole in the Heart

Coronary Sinus Atresia : The Coronary Sinus is Sealed, preventing de-oxygenated blood to flow to the heart.

Non- Compaction of Left Ventricle : This is a heart muscle condition in which the muscular wall of the main pumping chamber of the heart (the left ventricle) appears to be spongy and “non-compacted”, consisting of a mesh work of numerous muscle bands.

Olly has been cared for by Bristol Children’s Hospital. After a few scares and admissions to hospital since birth, it has been somewhat of a ‘rollercoaster ride’ for the family with surgery being scheduled and cancelled several times. Olly finally underwent vital heart surgery Friday 13th January in Bristol, just a day before his 1st birthday, and although in intensive care, and initially needing a pacer and transfusion, latest reports are that he is stable, much to the relief of his parents, family and friends. We wish Olly a speedy recovery from this
