Longlevens 43-5 Bredon Star
After disappointment of their last league outing the home side were out to make amends and get back to winning ways. For the first ten minutes it looked as if Bredon were about to spring a surprise but once Longlevens had weathered the early pressure from the visitors, normal service was resumed and the men from Longford Lane ran out worthy winners. With cup and league games coming thick and fast Levens were forced to field a much changed side from the previous week, when they disposed of Wessex from Devon, in the junior vase, but credit to those who stepped in they certainly put their hands up for a regular place after a very accomplished performance. Bredon were a decent side with many big bodies amongst the forwards as well as a very good nine, but the home side had the advantage of pace and fitness and the secret weapon of attacking from all areas of the field which on many occasions paid dividends. Longlevens only need one more win to clinch promotion, which on this display looks to be a formality, so should be playing their rugby next season in Gloucester premier.
One man from Longlevens who was pleased to see me at the game on Saturday was none other than the “fastest widow fitter in Gloucester” Mr Colin Rose. Colin had a bit of bad luck on Saturday when leaving the house on his way to the club, a gust of wind suddenly slammed the door shut behind him locking him out with his keys and wallet let inside the house. Lucky for Colin though, in his secret pocket inside his favourite coat he keeps his very special cash point card, only used on important occasions. Not to be one to turn up empty handed, off went Colin to the nearest hole in the wall, a mere 2miles out of his way, but nothings ever too much trouble for this man. On arrival at the machine Colin proudly withdraws the card from his coat and enters it smoothly into the reader ready to withdraw many beer tokens for the day, when can you imagine his shock, the card is spat out and a message is displayed on the screen, “Card out of date – Last used in 1982”!
As the kind of bloke I am when Colin told me of his predicament, I said not to worry as I had plenty and made sure Colin had a good afternoon/evening. In Gary Fowkes words, “You can’t take it with you”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This Saturday I’m off with Hucclecote who are at Bream in Glos premier clash. With the home side still fighting for survival and visitors having slipped down the table this looks to be a very close one to call, but one sure thing at Bream is whatever the result, your sure to get a warm welcome not only on the field but for the one that matters these days for me, is in the bar, always a great day out! Cheers Dave
