Hucclecote 5-20 Cheltenham Saracens
On a bitterly cold afternoon at the Old School Field Hucclecote will have been disappointed to get nothing from this game but can have no complaints with the final score line as the visitors thoroughly deserved the victory. From the off both sides were intent on moving the ball around the field but it was Saracens who were were first on the score sheet with a penalty goal kicked by their centre Bradley Harris who was eager to impress the home side supporters, due to his family connections with the Hucclecote club. This early score spurned the home side into action, with many bustling runs from the forwards, but there was no way through, with the visitors defence holding firm. The next action for the score board operator Mr Mark Brownlie, was to chalk up another three to the visitors, with another penalty goal. With frequent infringements from the home side the referee’s persistence eventually cracked and a yellow card was shown to the Hucclecote centre. With half time approaching the visitor’s forwards pressure finally paid off and managed a score with the extras duly added.
With Hucclecote needing to be the next on the score sheet they needed to throw caution to the wind but unfortunately a looped pass was plucked out of the air by the Saracens centre Harris who showed a clean pair of heels to gallop in from the Hucclecote ten yard line and score underneath the posts before adding the extras to put the visitors in to a 15-0 lead. Hucclecote would not lie down and continued to mount attacks when possible and were eventually rewarded with a try near the end. The home side can have few complaints with the final score whereas the visitors will be pleased to have gone away with a win. Good performances from the visiting forwards who were very well organised but for me the Saracens three-quarter line looked impressive and although Mr Harris will be pleased with his haul of 15 points, the outside half for me was the star man, pulling the strings superbly throughout the show. Mr Harris did also manage a ten minute break having been penalised for playing an opponent whilst in the air, which was greeted with the usual banter from the home support.
This week Hucclecote have no fixture so this gives me chance to watch one of our local sides who have yet to be beaten. Matson entertain Stroud in the western counties north and with Matson already having won this contest away from home with a majority verdict, on paper it looks like a home win.
Whilst at Redwell road this gives me a chance to catch up with my old mate Mr Mike Bayliss who I’m told has a new addition to the family. Before people start thinking along the wrong lines, I’m told it’s the canine version, after his wife Mandy told him she was getting a dog, that when she looked at it, it would remind her of him. This I’m looking forward to,as there a many breeds of dog that spring to mind, but I’ll wait to I see the real thing! I wonder what dog Sally Fowke would choose when thinking of her husband Gary? Answers please on a postcard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Dave
