Crusaders Tame Wolves And Go Top Of League
The North Herts Crusaders (sponsored by Fit4less Stevenage) continued their winning run by beating the Milton Keynes Wolves 52-8.
The North Herts Crusaders (sponsored by Fit4less Stevenage) continued their winning run by beating the Milton Keynes Wolves 52-8, although the score could have been much higher if the referee hadn't abandoned the game after 60 minute due to constant abuse in his direction by the opposition.
Before the start of play the North Herts Crusaders family were in solemn mood having learned of the tragic passing of their much loved friend Michael Robinson effectionately known as Micky Rob, a man who entertained both on and off the field, lighting up the pitch with his physical style of play and in the clubhouse after with his great sense humour. Micky you will be sorely missed by everyone. A minutes silence was bestowed in his honour.
As the game kicked off new boy Aaron Williams charged straight in to combat by taking it to the opposition, and with further carries from Bonne Wilce and Joe Butcher, a penalty was given for a high tackle. This led to a quick tap which saw Simon Hrbck score in the corner and put the Crusaders into the lead. Conversion missed.
Soon after the Crusaders returned the favour with a high tackle of their own which allowed the Wolves to maintain possession and get close to the Crusaders line, but with great defence from Kyle 'Rambo' Hughes as he stopped the Wolves over the line by turning the player on to he's back, try saved.
From the resulting scrum on the Crusaders own 10 meter line, the ball was knocked on knocked on which handed the ball back to the Wolves who got over the line for a second time and again it was held up thanks to the Crusaders great defence, however it was third time lucky as constant pressure by the Wolves meant that they finally got over the line to get the first points on the board. Persistent offside from the Wolves allowed the Crusaders to get close to their line, and with a great run and some ferocious leg pumping from the Crusaders dynamic leader Robin French, he crossed the line for his first try of the season. Conversion Robinson 4 -10 to Crusaders.
With the game turning firey and pressure being put on the Wolves by the Crusaders, the Wolves started to loose their heads and with wave after wave attack and quick thinking by Dan Bendon a whole in the defence appeared for him to scoot over the line for a try. With the ball in hand again, the Crusaders weaved their way through the Wolves defence and with great feet from Joe Butcher as he went on one of his mesmeric runs to score under the posts. Conversion Robinson 4 - 22 Crusaders.
From the restart the Crusaders hit back again and with great running from Henry Robinson putting the Crusaders on the front foot again swiftly passed the ball down the line and with great hands across saw young James Aylott score. Conversion Robinson. score 4-28
From a loose scrum the Crusaders switched off and failed to put pressure on the Wolves attack, leaving their winger to gas the Crusaders out wide and score their second and last try of the game. Conversion missed score 8 - 28.
As half time approached and with a scrum on the Crusaders own 10 meter line saw Dave Munson pick the ball up from the base of the scrum and runs the length of the field to score a fantastic try as his time away playing Rugby League for the British Army clearly showed the gulf in standard. Straight after half time break, he only went and did it again, Dave Munson breaks from the back of the scrum again to break away and score his second of the game leaving the trailing defenders in his wake. Conversion Robinson score 8-40.
From the restart the ball was taken in the air and went straight through the hands for Richard Streets to score. Conversion Robinson. score 8 - 46 Crusaders lead.
Now with play going back and forth the Crusaders took control of the game by working their way out of defence and into the hands of Henry Robinson who drew the players and produces a sweat pass to hrbck who finshed the game as he started with fine try. Conversion Robinson Final Score 8 - 52.
Throughout the game the referee had to endue persistent backchat and abuse from the Milton Keynes Team, this wasn't helping the game flow or the Wolves as the game was then abandoned due to referee having had enough.
The Crusaders now go top of the league with St Ives still to play on this Saturday, when the league will be decided. This brings to the end the league campaign for the Crusaders who have a very successful first season winning most games and now with the possibility of winning the league at the first time of asking. The second team The North Herts Crusaders 'A' may have also reached the play off for for the 'A' league which will be decided this weekend.
North Herts Crusaders are now in the Play offs and as we finished in the top 2 of the league will be played at home at Letchworth Rugby club Saturday 11th August 2:30 pm Kick off, the oponents to be decided, come and enjoy a great sporting day out. If the Crusaders win this game then they will be in the Grand Final on the 18th August 2012 which will be at a Neutral venue, yet to be confirmed.
