Promoted back into the Southern League this season following their relegation
three seasons ago, Winchester City have had a reasonable start. However their
Manager Guy Butters quit last month and moved to Brighton in a coaching role to
be replaced by an old adversary of ours James Taylor the ex AFC Totton and
Gosport Borough striker. Taylor in fact played in the game in an unfamilar
right back position.
The opening ten minute spell saw both teams attacking with no clear openings.
For Winchester the left wing man Adam Roberts looked fairly lively. The first
chance came on 13 mins when after a Stuart Hole free kick rebounded off the
Winchester defensive wall, the ball fell to Toby Clark who hit a rising drive
from the edge of the box that just cleared the bar. The opening goal came on 20
mins when a ball out of the Yellows defence found Kieran Sanders in the
opposition box. With good control with a couple of defenders around him he
passed to John Mills who cooly finished past keeper Rory Anderson from 5 yds.
Shortly afterwards the Referee Danny Leach was obliged to book the Yellows Tom
Franklin and Winchester's Andrew White. This was doubly unfortunate for White
as on 30 mins he was ajudged to have handled the ball just outside his own box
and as a result of a second caution was dismissed.
With the opposition down to ten men Winchester's defence was stretched and on
35 mins Lewis Coyle beat their offside trap but blasted the ball high and wide
with only the keeper to beat.
Shortly afterwards came Winchester's best chance with a free kick conceeded by
Toby Clark in a central position approx 25 yds from goal. The ball was struck
hard and low by Toby McCauley and Sam Warrell did very well to push the ball
away for a corner.
HT: North Leigh 1 - 0 Winchester City
Winchester started the second half well and the Yellows had to defend a couple
of early corners. However being a man down soon showed and the Yellows had a
series of attacks that were well defended by the opposition. However the longer
the game went with only a single goal advantage caused concern for the home
support as Winchester on the break looked dangerous.
The second goal eventually came on 76 mins when a long crossfield ball found
Michael Hopkins out on the left. He drifted inside a couple of defenders into
the box and hit a powerful right foot shot which deflected off central defender
Michael Byrne thereby wrong footing the keeper who stood helpless as it hit the
back of the net. Winchester attempted to fight back and Taylor moved himself
into his true striking position up front all to no avail.
