Perhaps as good a word as any to describe the season is "frustrating"

Frustrating given that a second-place finish was achieved the season before with more or less the same group of players.

Whilst the effort cannot be faulted, and there were one or two games where the scoreline did not accurately reflect the performance, nevertheless four wins and sixty-seven goals conceded from twenty games tells its own story.

Several players have underperformed but let us look at the positives. The twenty-one goals and nine Man Of The Match awards of Lewis Oldridge is an eye-catcher and the performance at high-flying West Riding side Leeds Medics was highly commendable and the 5-2 win at Calder '76 saw much fine football. Unfortunately, there was not a great deal else to enthuse about but that brings us neatly on to the 23rd April and a question:-

Q: What do you do on a damp, chilly blowy Monday night in Midgley?

A: Shock and surprise your supporters with an 8-3 win despite losing ten of your previous eleven games.

The win at Midgley proved absolutely crucial given that Illingworth St Mary's won their final game 7-3 leaving them relegated on goal difference. It is not yet completely certain that only one team will go down and is subject to the outcome of the league AGM in June but in the past where there has been eleven teams in the top division, only one has been relegated. The introduction of an eight team League Three this season may have a bearing on things but fingers crossed.

It is to be hope this season has been a salutary lesson for the players (there are few, if any, easy games in this league). If the performance at Midgley could be made the template for next season, better times are ahead. The retirement of skipper Matthew Rushworth leaves a very hard act to follow and he will be sorely missed but the players showed at Midgley they can produce the goods. It's just a question of the goods being produced on a much more regular basis.
