Lowestoft & Yarmouth 0 North Walsham 54

The Under 17s got their Eastern Counties Cup campaign off to a winning start against Lowestoft & Yarmouth on Sunday. The squad, enlarged since last season, will be looking to emulate or surpass the success of last season’s side who got to the London Division Final of the national competition before going out to a good Sevenoaks side.
Coaches Mark Fletcher and Nigel Rossi have decided that with so many of their players involved in two school matches a week before Christmas they would restrict their club rugby in the main to this competition.
With just one training session behind them the side got off to a good start with a try from Nick Moore in the third minute, followed quickly by a second from scrum half Max Moore with a blindside break from a scrum. L & Y were spirited but generally struggled to contain the Walsham’s rampaging forwards and pacy back division. They came close to scoring when a downwind kick was not cleared away and it took some great forward play to turn the ball over, and Toby Fletcher set off on a solo 80 metre run to touch down between the posts and convert. Ben Place broke off the back of a five metre scrum to score and then the impress Michael Haverty broke down the left before unloading to Max Moore who completed the first half scoring.
Ben Place started the second half with a good curving run to make the tryline. It was now pretty much one way traffic but it needed some good tackling to restrict the home side from making inroads. Nick Moore, Fletcher, Haverty and finally Laurence Austin scored at which point the referee with the score at 54 nil, in accordance with the rules of the competition called a halt.
L& Y decided they wanted to continue playing but when Walsham had made four further touchdowns the referee finally called a halt.

The next fixture is at Bury St Edmunds on Oct 31st (tbc) and the squad will train on the 3rd and 17th October.
