This weekends rugby preview

Northwich hit a brick wall last weekend with all four teams losing, so what went wrong and what’s to look forward to this coming Saturday.

22nd September
1961 Antonio Albertondo (Argentina) completes 1st "double" crossing swim of English Channel in 43 hrs 10 min at age 42.

Northwich produced some flowing rugby for the opening 30 minutes at Birkenhead before the tide turned allowing the home side to run in 3 quick tries in the final 10 minutes of the first half in a match not for the faint hearted. BP thinking the points was in the bag, Northwich however, had other ideas as they totally reversed Park’s domination and ran amok with tries from R Dale, J Underhill and Baldwin closing the gap to just 6 points with five minutes remaining. The momentum was all with Northwich and when they scored the final try out wide deep in injury time through Houghton they had a chance to snatch victory. Fortunately for Park Baldwin was unable to land the tricky conversion and the final whistle sounded much to the relief of the Park players and supporters. Birkenhead Park gaining a single point victory in North One West as they just survived a spectacular Northwich fight back to take maximum points with a bonus point win at Upper Park.

Northwich are on the road again traveling to Burnage 3pm kick-off playing on the all-weather surface at Varley Park. Last week Warrington’s strong start to the season received a setback when they encountered a fired-up Burnage side whose first half performance was just enough to withstand a second half fight back from the away team. The first half belonged to Burnage, with their sharp and elusive inside backs proving a real test of the Warrington defence, but during the second 40 minutes the bigger heavier Burnage scrum started to tire allowing Warrington an opportunity of a losing bonus point.

Northwich 2 the only team at Moss Farm, are entertaining Helsby, undefeated after 3 games and sitting top of the table. Helsby beating C&N 45-0 in their league and cup double header, whilst Northwich crashed to Collegiate 17-38 in theirs.

Northwich 3 visiting Congleton 2, who drew 24-24 with Oswestry last week. This fixture is one Northwich need and on paper should win following the lesson a game of two half’s v Leek. This young developing squad needs to learn the tide can so often turn at the half way marker and points are not in the bag until the final whistle.

Norhwich Colts having been defeated by Leigh last weekend have the opportunity to regroup and rest a few niggling injuries as they have a planned recovery week.
