24th Nov Preview & chatter

There is an evolution taking place at Northwich as the 1st XV put the poor seasons start behind them as they progress to a 4 game unbeaten run.

Did you know? 24th Nov 1859.Today is the anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's book: On the Origin of Species. His controversial theory turned the world upside down, in its thinking of how we came to be. And, it remains controversial to this day.

Northwich entertain Penrith at Moss Farm 2.15pm kick-off. Penrith made the level transfer East to West after finishing 3rd in their respective league last season. Taking into account and deducting points for their extra 2 games played, had they been in North 1 West last term they would have finished in 3rd with Northwich in 4th with the same wins / losses but topping Northwich with their greater +/- point difference.

And this season the margins are still as tight with Penrith currently in 5th with 31 points, Northwich 7th with 30 points. Both teams scoring 285 points for, with +/- Penrith +1, Northwich +24. Penrith now winning 4 on the trot, beating Warrington in Cumbria last week 22-20.

Penrith were delighted with their narrow win over a physical Warrington side last Saturday, the league position and playing record of both sides going into the game suggested it would be a close contest and that is exactly how it worked out, there were three tries being scored by either side and only a Nathan Wooff conversion to split the teams after 80 minutes.
The game throughout was even with the lead changing hands on two occasions and never more than a few points in it, the home side retook the lead with quarter of an hour to go, they were hanging grimly on at the end and were more than pleased to hear the final whistle. Warrington threw all they had into attack and took on a penalty and the wind assisted kick got them to within two points. It was a nerve jangling last ten minutes but the home line held firm but not without one or two scares. They often looked to be easily keeping possession and running down the clock to then turned the ball over too easily and had to defend once more, but they held out as they recorded their fourth successive win.

Northwich whilst on a winning streak are still being breached in defence, if they can shore up the battlements and return to fortress Moss Farm, home advantage could be the deciding factor this Saturday.

Northwich are enjoying a rejuvenation in playing numbers and we hope this healthy competition between the squads continues 56 players available and all being involved and getting game time last weekend. Also a small number watching from the touchline recovering from injury.

Northwich 2 journey to one of the leagues naughty boys’ bottom placed Wirral 3s. Wirral 3 reported a 25-0 loss when they actually conceded, they were fined 5 points and 2 points for the concede, for the same infringement Liverpool Collegiate fined 10 points for reporting the win.

Northwich 2 are running hot & cold at present and with Ian Lamb showing his dark side as the red mist descended (although by provocation) resulting in yet another dismissal. But “Blacks” hope to finish November recording draw, loss and a win on Saturday.

Northwich 3 travel to table toppers Newcastle (Staffs) 2 who have only lost 1 game v C&N. However last week they only just beat 8th placed Congleton by 3 points. Whilst 5th placed Northwich produced their own silence of the lambs epic as they belted Linley 64-7.

It’s getting serious now and for the second time this season we remind ALL club members,

Bad disciplinary record. Clubs should note that where players from or other members of a Club or people linked to a Club appear before a Disciplinary Committee (which includes a Club Disciplinary Committee and, thus, junior players) on more than 5 separate occasions in any one season, then that Club may be deemed to have a bad disciplinary record and sanctions may then be imposed on the Club itself or any of its teams.

Enjoy your weekends rugby & let the only cards be early Christmas ones.
