Rugby chatter Home & Away

1st Team Opponents: Douglas
Match Venue: Port-E-Chee
Kick Off: 3:00pm

Northwich fly to the Isle of Man in optimistic mood on the back of 2 wins, with a large group of supporters for the game at Douglas RUFC. However some supporters may well remember our last defeat at Port-E-Chee way back in March 2015 when Douglas inflicted a 20-17 score line.

Newly promoted Douglas debut in North 1 West ended with success when they beat Warrington 22-10 at Port-e-Chee. Douglas led 22-0 at half time, Warrington getting back in contention due to a yellow card for the home team. Last week Douglas met their Waterloo suffering their first defeat in North 1 West when they lost 39-23 away at Firwood Waterloo. After going 8-0 behind in the first five minutes Douglas battled back with a try and two penalties. Trailing 15-11 at half time, the wheels came off the Douglas wagon early in the second half when Murray was red carded for what was adjudged a lifting tackle and Waterloo ran way with the game.
It would appear Douglas are a feisty outfit this term.

We last met in February 2016 Northwich 6-21 victors. Prior to that game Postie said – a trip to Douglas this weekend represents one of the toughest obstacles Northwich must overcome on a journey they hope will end in promotion. The Isle of Man outfit have won seven of nine South Lancs/Cheshire Division One matches played on their own pitch this season, well this Northwich win was the 13th, in what culminated in a run of 21 successive victories resulting in promotion as Champions.

This being our best set of results since 2007. What happened that season? The Moss Farm men were again promoted as South Lancs/Cheshire Division One champions.

For those unable to travel there is plenty of activity at Moss Farm, you can still support our 2’s v Warrington 2, our seconds need to establish themselves in a new and tougher league & 3’s v Sandbach 3.

Warrington took a hastily-assembled squad of just 15 players to Kirkby Lonsdale, having suffered eight last minute cry-offs, and were understandably well-beaten 50-0. Warrington’s second team bounced back from their heavy defeat the previous week at Kirkby Lonsdale with a well-earned draw at Broughton Park. Fielding a mix of young players and veterans they combined well to force the draw 18-18.

A new look Northwich 3s, who have a number of ex-colts bringing some extra dynamics to the squad are still to register a win meet Sandbach 3

Northwich will need all your support this Saturday home & away in what promises to be very competitive games make the effort to get along to watch.

On Sunday Northwich Senior Colts have their first home game of the season when they host Oldham at Moss Farm KO 2pm.
All Colts teams are initially seeded into Prelim leagues playing each other once, Following the Prelim' Season the Conference Leagues will be formulated by the Seeding Panel.

Northwich have started the season well winning both fixtures on their travels to Marple & Heaton Moor notching up 95 points for, 0 against. They face stiffer opposition this week Oldham only 1 point behind in second place. Oldham Senior Colts started the season against a resilient and well prepared Garstang. Oldham's defence being uncompromising at times, as well as physical and it will take a good team to unlock the wall of red. Oldham secured their 2nd win of the season against a strong Marple outfit 33-10 at home. Massive improvement from last week, and now that the squad is all fit and raring to go, selection is going to be difficult for the trip to Northwich.

Enjoy your weekends rugby.
