Youth's shine for Northwich

This was the very definition of a team effort as Northwich overcame Congleton, with Nige unavailable to coach and only 14 players at the warm up with Tom Sparkes arriving just as the game was kicking off giving Northwich the flat 15, Northwich would be forgiven for expecting a tough day at the office and the first 5 mins they didn’t exit the 22. However as the ball was passed along the line Nathan Johnson spotted a gap and slalomed his way through three or four players, as the full back came to tackle him, he somehow managed to find an extra gear to score a brilliant solo try. The next try was completely different and involved forwards and backs with the forwards crashing up the ball before it was spread wide for Chris Forrest to step back past the covering winger to dot down. The third try was similar with the forwards involved in an arm wrestle making the hard meters to go within 5 metres, a brilliant spot by Harry Naylor to go blind allowed Nathan to power over the would be tackler for his second try. Northwich then switched off for the next 20 minutes, but for some excellent defence lead by the back row of Taylor, Sweeney and Plant they would’ve allowed Congelton back in to the game, but it’s testament that for all the possession Congelton only managed to bag one try. A break by the dangerous centre for Congelton looked sure to result in a try but for Tom Williams to cover from one side of the pitch to make a brilliant tackle just outside the 22, Congelton looked to spread it wide but an excellent interception by Tom Sparkes stopped them in their tracks, Sparky then broke down the pitch (in the past he would’ve scored himself but his diet of cigarettes and alcohol has lead to him being 18 and a half stone) he found Tom Williams who had recovered from his terrific defensive effort to round the final defenders and run it in. HT 24-5 to Northwich.

Northwich knew that if they allowed Congelton to score next they had the fire power to come back into the game. After 5 minutes the exciting 9/10 combination of two 17 year olds Harry Naylor and Elliot Kelsall combined to ease the nerves. Kelsall made a brilliant break through the line and showed great patience to time a pass to Naylor who made a great supporting line to step the final man and dot down. If these two lads keep progressing and learning there’s the makings of the 1st team half back combination for many years. Congleton then used their scrum domination to score a second try, but there after the action was all Northwich. The next try came after a few brilliant breaks from Naylor and Johnson and a big crash ball and leg drive by Bullet who offloaded to supporting Williams to bag his second try of the game. The final try came with the final play of the game, a clearance kick pinned Congleton on the halfway line, but an excellent steal by Taylor regained possession for Northwich, Bullet made an extra 10 metres to be just inside the Congelton half and as Naylor look set to pass to Taylor and free the backs, Usain Gibbon came crashing onto the ball at great pace to break through the gap and run the remaining 40 metres.

An excellent team effort, every single player should take massive pride in their performance and all of them would have a case to be man of the match and be justified if they received it.
