4 from 4
after last week’s postponement due to the great British weather, it was a trip up the motorway to Bury RUFC.
We can all see by the recent results, this team have started well, a combination of senior boys and last year’s U16’s has amalgamated into a good side. The best way this is demonstrated is when we have not played at our best we still win.
A squad off 22 travelling players, made the effort to attend and we explained that all players would receive game time and play in a variety of positions this week. Credit to the lads they adapted and did what we asked.
We started very brightly, and you could sense a potential good points tally with a clever pick and go of the base of the scrum for Sam Platt adding the first 5 points to the game.
Credit to bury they gave it a good go, today we were guilty of some individual rugby, and never quite got the full momentum going, with the pace of our back line we still need to work on the forwards securing the ball and letting it go through hands in the backs.
By no means was this a bad performance, but we did not always play as a team but when we did we had a few inventive try’s to come, a huge forwards turnover led to Tom touching down to take it 10 points clear.
A lovely little dink over a ruck from Harry had Kyle running on at pace to collect and touch down for the 3rd score of the afternoon.
Again, when the ball shipped through our back line, you could see the potential we have and some slick movement gave Kyle the chance to make it 20 points clear.
Bury to their credit were camped on our try line us giving away 4 penalties, but they could not break down the defence, our forwards are so powerful, it was the last penalty Bury knew they could not punch through so opted for a clever cross-filed kick to their winger to make it 20-5 a great try.
The lads know there mistakes today, and we do not need to tell them, they regrouped and gave it straight back, Edd Mcphillips making it 25-5 and then Tom Clarke making it 30-5.
The biggest cheer of the day went to Harry, who as a place kicker is brilliant but today his conversions were not hitting the mark until his final attempt making it 32-5.
There were some good performances today, but a mention to Sam Preece his defensive work was fantastic. Also to all the people who played in new positions, Kyle and I are having selection nightmares, which is a great problem to have.
It is only fair to thank Bury for their hospitality, and a game played in the very spirit of rugby, which demonstrated the core values. They wished us well for the rest of the season and we thank them for the way the game was conducted.
Even the ref praised both teams on their spirit of play, so another win 4 games 4 wins 139 points scored 9 against not bad at all.
