A Test Of Character

Last time we played Broughton Park they beat us by 10 points, so we knew today we were in for a tough physical game. From the off it appeared their game plan was to come at us all guns blazing and they did. They have many powerful players, and despite some great defensive work, we conceded 2 trys which were converted. Message to the lads was simple spread the ball use the width and score in the corners.

We dragged ourselves back in the game with 2 trys, after clever kicks to on rushing wingers to touch down. Score was 10-14. This was going to be a battle, and I have to say we played our part in a great first half, both sides committing men at the breakdown; our forwards gave everything today and competed for everything. We had the edge on lines outs, and a clever play resulted in Tom c collecting the ball at the front of a line and powering over from 10 yards. The game was being played at a great pace, and was poised at 22-21 to the black and gold; it was anyone’s game at this point.

The turning point came, after let us say some high levels of testosterone boiling over on both sides. A word with the lads asked them to dig deep show character and play the rugby we know they are capable off. In cases like these, it is what they do with the emotion that counts, and they channelled it the right way. And boy, did they. For the last 15 mins we took control, running in 4 superb trys, the standard we played hit a new level and the lads should be proud of how they conducted themselves.

I will not single out players for praise as collectively the players “got their act together” and played rugby we simple wanted it more.

Sadly, we lost Ed with a nasty gash to the head. Tom Merrick after a superb display had to leave the field with a knee injury and wish them both speedy recoveries. The lads were a credit to the club today and turned a very tough first 25 mins to a score line of 48-21 in our favour.

I would also like to thank the senior players watching in helping pack away the barriers, and for George running the line in true professional manner.
