Colts return to action
& claim a victory over Preston Grasshoppers
It’s been since the 3rd December, Northwich colts have played a game, the weather gods have been very unkind to rugby. The decision at the beginning of the week to reverse the fixture and play at Preston on their G4 pitch proved correct as again Moss farm was home to visiting dolphins!
Having not played, the message to the team was simply have fun, be inventive and use the pace we possess. From the off we dominated the early exchanges and were unlucky not to be 2 try’s up within the first 5 mins, some inventive running from harry and a clever kick from Tom Merrick just fell short of the try line.
I asked the forwards to work hard and create the opportunities for the backs to put ball through hand. On numerous occasions we could have scored but the deadlock was finally broken by Tom Merrick nothing more than he deserved. Theo on his debut for the colts put in a powerful display and scored a great try. Conversions were had to obtain kicking in the wind, and sadly, the try’s went unconverted.
The first half was played a fast pace with both sides competing well, but we had the edge in terms of inventiveness, and desire to win. I often ask the older players to set the standard for the younger lads, James, Sam Platt, Preecy Ross and Tom M certainly did that and we had a spring in our step.
We went in at the break 10 nil up, at half time the lads discussed what had worked and were we need to improve, Preston started brightly and we had to defend heavily. Special mention to Jamboo on his tackling today he was superb. Tom C and Alfie were all over the park competing at every ruck turning the ball over. This allowed the back line to run and gain ground, an error was forced penalty given, scrum half Naylor spotted a gap, and in usual fashion weaved his way through to touch down a try and convert as well.
Due to injury, Sam Preece had to retire and scrums went uncontested, you will always miss Sam when he is not on. For the next 15 mins we took control, and through wingers in Ross Ollie and Tom started to gain ground playing Phase after Phase. Jamboo went on to score 2 wonderful trys today nothing more than he deserved.
The play of the game was just like Farrell to May, but this time Naylor to Kyle Clark a clever kick to towards the touchline resulting in super-fast Kyle catching the ball and touching down for a superb score.
Best cheer of the game came after a great solo run by No 8 Sam Platt who just before falling over due to his legs giving up, offloaded to winger Ross who scored a try. Ross is a player with immense speed who deserves to score.
Fair play to Preston they dug in and scored two great try’s, a difficult day for all between the wind, snow hail Hooker Nathan was excellent in his line out throws.
Every player deserves credit today, they went out and gave it all, after such a long wait for a game they were a credit to Northwich RUFC. As a coach, they enjoyed this victory, but they needed it after such a long absence.
It was a pleasure to watch today well done Lads !!!
