Northwich Colts welcomed Colne & Nelson to Moss Farm after a 3 week break from playing on Sundays. With the visiting only able to put 13 players out Northwich could field 14. Northwich had been in this situation at the start of the season and knew not to think the game would be a walk over.
The games started quick for Northwich and were able to put Colne on the back foot straight away. After making yards close to the ruck and pulling the defenders in, a Harry Naylor cross-field kick landing nicely for Tom Husband to collect on the right side of the pitch and run under the posts. Northwich took a 7-0 lead. From the restart Tom Clark collected the ball charged through the defence brushing of tackles, immediately making Colne back track. After strong running from the pack and getting to the defence’s five yard line, Tom Clark received the ball from the ruck and charged over the line. Naylor converted to make it 14-0. The third try of the first half was a simply pass down the line from a scrum on the right side of the pitch. Kyle Clarke was at the end of the line to sprint to the left corner and slide over the try line. Naylor from the touchline used the woodwork to add the extra 2 points. Colne did test the defence of Northwich and played some strong basic rugby in the first half but after some big tackles Northwich were able to overturn the ball. The final try of the first half came from a scrum on Colne’s 5 yard line. Harry Naylor playing scrum half picked the ball up from the base of the scrum and ran to the try line to add to his points tally for the day. He would the extra 2. Northwich took a 28-0 lead into half time.
The 2nd started again with Northwich making strong runs. Their only try of the half which would come from a Colne kick not finding touch. Tom Husband collected the kick and after dancing through the Colne defence, an offload to Tom Clark would see he run under the posts for his 2nd of the match. Naylor made it 5 out of 5 with the boot. Unfortunately Colne weren’t able to continue after their prop’s shoulder was injured and a back got a dead leg taking them down to 11 men. Both coached agreed on the game and let the lads play 10-a-side for 10 mins.
Northwich were meant to be playing Burnley Colts this Sunday but regrettably they have folded so have another week off.
