The Northwich U12s visited Sandbach RUFC for the first RFU Cluster Festival of the 2018/19 season. The rain held off to produce an action packed morning of intense rugby. With a dramatic change of ethos by the RFU, the focus of the day was to put the players, rather than the coaches and parents first. All coaches and players were banned from the side lines leaving the players to work out the strategy for each match, manage themselves and work out in the post game debrief what went well and what could be improved on in future games. Tries were not counted, with points being awarded for leg tackles, pops off the floor, turnovers and kicks to regain/score. The focus was on player development, retention and more importantly fun.
Northwich were placed in a group with old friends from Congleton, Sandbach, Lymm and Bowdon. Four excellent games were played in excellent spirit. If one team dominated, players were soon often swapped between teams to even up the competition. This resulted in many new friendships being made and the eventual winners being the kids, and the game of rugby.
Many thanks to Sandbach RUFC for their excellent organisation and all other teams for embracing the spirit and ethos of the morning. We hope the RFU and all clubs continue to embrace the new player centred game.
