The best way to keep up to date with Northwich RUFC

Northwich 1st - Match centre

Sat 7 Oct 15:00 - Northern Division - North One West Full time

High in expectation, low in execution.

Now a weeks rest to recover.

Manchester 19 Northwich 10

Northwich always travel high in expectation. However, spirits were dampened by both the rain and the performace of Manchester. Certainly the home side played the conditions better than the blacks who struggled to get any rhythm into their game. Lapniewski came in for Bates and had a great game until being injured in the final minutes, this injury was one of three that marred the match for the blacks with Dale and Reilly also needing to leave the field.

This was a low scoring game that managed to maintain entertainment throughout. Northwich started well but too many handling errors handed the initiative to the home side. On the 8th minute Manchester took the lead with a well struck penalty when the blacks were caught offside. Two minutes later Manchester extended their lead. Following a break in mid-field the Northwich defence were stretched and a cross-field kick found the winger who had an easy run in. The extras gave the home side a 10-0 lead. On the 23rd minute Northwich responded with a fine try. A counter attack from deep saw some great work from Lindsay who made the telling pass to Barber for him to score. Baldwin added the extras to bring the blacks back into the match. This proved to be the final score of the half which saw the blacks trying to get into the match but making too many errors. The Manchester approach was far more pragmatic as they maintained more control.

The second half was a similar affair with all the scores coming from the boot. On the 46th and 51st minutes the home side kicked two penalties both for offside. On the 60th minute Baldwin pegged the score back with a penalty when Manchester were penalised for not releasing in the tackle. The final score came with just 10 minutes left when the home side were awared a penalty close to the sticks. This score denied the blacks a bonus point in a match that they deserved some reward.

The coaching staff will welcome the one week break as thay try to get players fit for the next round.
