North Yorkshire Under 17s deliver big win against the odds.
In cold, greasy conditions with fog laying over the pitch the players put the disappointment of a narrow and undeserved loss last week behind them as they put in a performance to be proud of against a East Yorkshire team built around a huge forward pack.
Indeed, in the early exchanges it was all North Yorkshire as wave after wave of attack broke against the East defence. However, when East got some possession they were quick to move upfield and force North to do some defending. Following a scrum, the North backs were released with Marsden putting Ledley through on a great line and carving open the East defence. A quick 40 metres made and with players in support the ball was moved quickly left and the line beckoned. A pile up on the line was broken with Boxall, playing scrum half, darting over for a try. Whyman added a fine conversion for a 7 point lead.
After a number of periods in which the game ebbed and flowed from end to end North always looked the more likely to score. However the East team kept plugging away through their forwards which was countered by a fine defensive effort from the North team who were giving away size and weight to their opponents.
After one very promising attack, Jopling sliced through the East first up tackles and wrong footing the cover, went in at the posts for a great score. Again the extras were added to open up a 14 point lead which is how the first half ended.
At half time the coaching team made a number of changes - some from choice, some enforced - and one involving the ever unlucky Pitt who had to come off the pitch again with injury.
The second half started brightly for East Yorkshire who again piled on the pressure with their huge forwards. Both at scrum time and in the tight exchanges they exerted great pressure on the North team, who defended fiercely and with good organisation. East were unlucky not to score on several occasions when firstly they went over the line and failed to ground the ball and secondly their player was adjudged to have made a double movement.
However, mid way throught he second half East finally breached the North Yorkshire team's line and scored a good try out wide after numerous phases through their forwards close to the posts. Their kicker missed the conversion so the score was now 14 - 5.
For the next 15 minutes it was all East with them setting up camp in the North 22. However, on the one or two occasins that the North backs got their hands on the ball they made good ground and on their first visit to the East 22 they scored a fine try with Butler getting the touchdown. Again, Whyman added the extra 2 points with a great kick from wide out to extend the North's lead to 21 - 5.
The final 5 minutes seemed to last an eternity as again the East team pressed hard but after more time in the North 22 East lost possession during one final attack and, with relief, the ball was kicked into touch to be greeted by the final whistle.
A great team performance by North Yorkshire who played with pace, precision and above all passion. Their defence was magnificent and their team work exemplary as they deservedly won a good game. The East Yorkshire team should be proud of their effort but on the day North rdged a very close encounter.
