Norton Athletic v Heils Bakery Crusaders
Norton bounce back to secure first win of season
Norton went into the game still without a win all season. However Heil's Bakery’s record wasn’t much better and so it was looking like an even contest. Norton’s performance in the previous game against Martham gave them a lot of confidence before it was unfortunately called off due to a serious injury.
Norton started the game positively and were creating early chances. Everyone was playing well and it only felt like a matter of time before Norton would score. Mark B had some good strikes and Glen W was getting in behind, but missed a couple of tight angle one on ones. It was Heil's Bakery, however, that struck first. Their first notable attack gaining a corner, and after a bit of a scramble at the near post, their striker was able to turn and smash home from close range. Despite the frustration of conceding against the run of play, Norton still looked strong although Heil's were gaining in confidence. Then Heil's hit Norton with another sucker punch, a long ball saw them with two against two, and their striker bundled his way through with a clumsy dribble, and he was able to finish well to see the 2-0 up against the run of play. Norton shell shocked, stuck at it and an excellent strike by Carl Cooper saw Norton back in it before the break. Norton walking off feeling like they could have scored more if it hadn’t have been for the form of the Heil's keeper.
Second half saw Norton dominate for most of it. Some good work from Chris Burton winning the ball high up the field to keep the attacks flowing. However Norton, despite creating numerous chances, kept squandering their efforts in front of goal. And it took a cross come shot from Chris Burton which ended up in the top corner for Norton to equalise. Further chances followed, a couple of one on ones missed by Glen Watts and 6 yard header missed by Jason Bates. Phil East almost netted but his shot went wide. Some good work from Glen late on resulted in a penalty for Norton and Chris Smith took it well to secure the win. 3-2 to Norton.
Barry C - 7 - Didn’t have lots to do, but his kicking and distribution was good.
Scott Y - 8 - Good performance, passing out from the back under pressure was consistently good.
Danny H - 8 - Filled in at centre back through injuries, strong in the air and very solid for most of it. A couple of dodgy moments that he got away with.
Aaron H - 8 - Also filled in at centre back, a good solid performance.
Chris B - 9 - Played really well, scored a goal and had a really good battling performance.
Steve W - 7 - Got some good crosses in, but he was never found at the far post in good positions when arriving late into the box.
Rich M - 8 - A great battling performance, always kept talking throughout and covered a lot of ground.
Carl C - 8 - Looked strong and won a lot in the air, scored a great goal from the edge of the box.
Craig A - 7 - Plenty of good running, kept busy and didn’t do a lot wrong.
Mark B - 7 - Looked a real threat in the first half, some good strong shots from range, unfortunate to go off injured.
Glen W - 7 - Was a good presence upfront, won the penalty, just left his scoring boots at home!
Chris S - 8 - Played a more defensive role is this game, and was pretty solid for most of it. Kept his cool to score the winning penalty.
Phil E - 6 - Only got 30mins in the second half, almost scored a winning goal.
Jason B - 7 - Put more effort than anyone, with some great unselfish runs, another pair of scoring boots left at home!
