Deryck Stanton Sharman worked for The Norwich Union Life Insurance Society at Head Office, Norwich. He entered company service in the Solicitors' Department in January 1939. He was a good sportsman and played regularly for the office teams. He was killed on active service in Batavia on 14 January 1946, aged 24. His rank and unit are given as Warrant Officer (Pilot), RAFVR, 31 Squadron. According to his obituary in the staff magazine, "He had been delivering the daily food supplies to Bandung from Batavia and was returning to Headquarters in very bad weather when his plane crashed into a hillside in dense jungle.
He had a jovial and lovable disposition and was extremely popular with his colleagues and all with whom he came into contact. He was typical of England's finest young manhood and will be greatly missed."
