Union return to winning ways

In an entertaining clash with top four rivals

Match Report: Gareth Davis

Union returned to winning ways in an entertaining clash with top four rivals Norwich Medics.
A few changes again as Michael Shucksmith and, Craig Dunbar and Tom Whitehouse missed out and we welcomed back the steadying influence of Simon Bunting at fly half.

A fairly chaotic and error strewn opening period saw union eventually score through man of the match Jon Spicker which Simon Bunting converted. Then followed a very poor period for Union as Medics came back, capitalising on poor defensive work and penalties conceded to take the lead with two well taken tries. Medics were causing the home-side many problems, helped by mistakes that littered Union’s game. Union regained the lead with a try wide out when Captain Simon Pitcher forced himself over after Union managed to stop forcing play and focus on making better decisions to enter the break with a narrow lead.

Half time helped few things were said about Union’s approach and how to improve. The forwards were asked for more and to put their hands up and carry, the response was great as all the pack contributed, as well as Matthew Cook, who had a fine game at inside centre.
Thrusts from improving Ryan Day, the Spencely brothers Chris and Matt as well as Matt Gyton who all made inroads into Medics short defence. Evergreen Noel Jones providing, along with the excellent Jake Rodwell the experienced hand on the tiller as Lloyd Davis enjoyed and armchair ride at scrum half, picking out rotating runners and keeping Medics on their heels, both in attack and defence.
Union scored tries through Ben Bond-Webster, Simon Pitcher got his second and then Callum Slaughter who finished off some counter attacking led by Ryan Day that Medics failed to clear, allowing Lloyd Davis to give the scoring pass for Slaughter to score and finish the game in some style.

Medics scored another try following a breakout led by their busy flanker who created problems for us all game. In front of a fair sprinkling of supporters, with the ex-players in attendance we got the win that will see us enter the next stage of the season in good shape. Progress is being made but the numbers at training still need to improve as sorting things out just before kick-off is not the best preparation.
After the game Coach Gareth Davis said “Ultimately, some good support running in the backs and some good kicking from Lloyds out of hand enabled us to seize the momentum and play their game in the right areas. It was good that we had so many runners offering themselves as our usual runners were side-lined and ultimately not needed this time. We will have much bigger tests in wait and need to continue making better decisions, especially under pressure when we are still too slow to transition and get organised. We travel to Swaffham next Saturday in a good position and will be looking to snatch third place in the league. This would be a strong achievement from union and highlight the progress the club had made both on and off the field this season.

Many thanks to Medics and their trusty doctors for patching up our walking wounded and for a strong hard game, usual respect to our volunteers quietly doing their thing behind the scenes too. We are a special club” man of the match: Jon Spicker
