Firebirds put Wymondham 3s to the sword
Scoring 7 tries to 2 in a thrilling game at home
A strong Firebirds team put Wymondham 3s to the sword in style, scoring seven tries to one and a thrilling game at home.
With the visitors unable to field a front row the scrums were uncontested from the start, something that worked to the Firebirds advantage as their lighter pack may have struggled otherwise. The game started at a fast pace, Oli Ward making a break and offloading to Lloyd Davis who ran in to score from 10m out. Rodney Arbon was next to score picking the ball from the base of a ruck before powering through two would-be tacklers to score the Firebirds second try.
Scrum half Adrien Marie-Francoise was a live wire all game testing the fringes with some sniping runs, one of which led to him scoring as he spotted a gap and scampered through to score his first try for the club. Arbon was again on the score sheet scoring his second of the game just before the half time break. It was the visitors who had last word of the half scoring from some good driving play resulting in a 20-7 score line at the break.
The Firebirds brought on fresh legs at half time with Davis being replaced by Tom Whitehouse at fullback and veteran winger being replaced by Mikel Freeman-Pannett, Chris Spenceley joined the fray with Steve Knights making way for him in the front row.
Despite scoring a further three tries in the second half it was a much tighter affair with Wymondham having galvanised themselves despite losing a player to a red card in the first half. The early exchanges were fierce with neither team giving much quarter to the other. However, Arbon broke the deadlock and completed his hat trick with a try from close range, Marie-Francoise popping him the ball from the base of a ruck on the visitors 5m line.
Oli Ward made amends for dropping the ball over the line in the first half, scoring a brace of tries in quick succession with some strong running as the Wymondham defence tired.
Wymondham again had the last word scoring their second try in the final stages of the game, with the final score being 44-12.
www.osteostasis.com man of the match Matt Lefevre showed how far he’s come having only started playing in October with some great takes at the lineout and some excellent carries one of which was a 60m effort from his own half. There were also notable performances from Rob Claydon playing cementing his position at inside centre in only his second game for the club with a fine performance both in defence and attack. On the wing Jack Cottingham made some great breaks and was unlucky not to score from a great kick chase.
The Firebirds next game is away at North Walsham 3s on the 17th February.
