Plantation Park breached!
The boys went into the game 15 months un beaten at Plantation Park.
Having to play three games in five days, Hilts had to prioritise ensuring the players still had legs left for a cup final two days later. The win at Godmanchester had seen us reach the two big goals, the final league game of the season had nothing riding on it for the team, only Blakey had a personal target to go for the Golden Boot.
Before kick off Mathew Blake was awarded the supporters player of the year trophy for the season well deserved, 40 plus goals isn't a bad return! With Paul Cook and Ben Thompson rested the boys were looking to help Blakey who before the game sat equal top of the goal scorers table with Tom Meechan on 32.
The first half started with the Yellows playing into a strong wind blowing straight up the pitch towards the club house end. The first 45 was a real battle, Matt Blake had a couple of good opportunities his control and a bumpy pitch letting him down. Brantham produced nothing with the elements in their favour so the half time whistle was a positive for the boys, they could go out with the wind in their favour and get the job done. The only negative was news from Goddy Rovers where Meechan had got on the score sheet to go one up on Blakey.
The second half did not start as expected, Greg Crane received a yellow card on 47 minutes, from the free kick on the left the ball was played across the edge of the box then smashed into a crowded box, Andy Cusack looked to block the ball it struck him high on the arm penalty! Brantham. Ollie Mann beat Duncan 1 - 0 Brantham.
Arron Kay and Greg Crane were replaced minutes later by Steve Shipley and Paul Cook. The boys were in control looking for the equaliser Cooky and Blakey were starting to dominate. On 62 minutes a ball played over the top by Josh Carus, was collected by Matt Blake and neatly lifted over the keeper 1 - 1 equal on both counts score and golden boot run in.
Matt was on a charge lots of opportunities came his way, but he was rushing and snatching at things, not his usual cool calm self. On 67 minutes away on goal Matt got a good strike off but it was well saved by Bedingfieldin the Brantham nets.
On 70 minutes with the whole of the Planters team in the Brantham half the majority in the box, Brantham won the ball and broke quickly a single long ball out to Ollie Mann was unstoppable, Manns pace took him away and good control saw him beat Duncan with relative ease. 1 - 2 Brantham. The boys have conceded just 24 goals in the league in 38 games Ollie Mann had scored 5 god help us if he'd been fully fit!
The final 20 minutes saw the Brantham goal under siege, Blakey took the paint off the outside of the post twice, Cooky had two really good chances that slid just wide. Chance after chance with the Brantham back four and midfield throwing everything in front of the ball. The final whistle saw a 2 - 1 win for Brantham, two chances two goals. The Planters created enough chances to win two or three games the only negative was Meechan got a second to take the Golden Boot. The positives being nobody got injured and others were well rested in preparation for the Cup Final on Bank Holiday Monday.
The Premier Division Trophy was presented after the game well deserved Champions with 26 points to spare, 101 points 103 Goals.
