Planters finally win under lights
The boys finally got the monkey off their backs of struggling under floodlights. After seven straight defeats under lights their final opportunity this season to put it right ended in a victory.
Following another poor start on Saturday at Haverhill when we conceeded after just one minute ten seconds, it was important to get out of the blocks quickly against Brantham, who still had an outside chance of topping the league at the end of the season.
The game was pretty even in the first 15 minutes with the planters pressing really well not allowing Brantham to settle into the game. After 19 minutes the stalemate was broken when a ball over the top fell between Nathan Howard and the centre half, Nathan won the battle, wriggled free and went through one on one with the keeper, Nathan cooly slid the ball past the keeper. 1 - 0 to the Yellows.
United continued to press with the back four snubbing out any threat from the Brantham forwards, on 26 minutes a quality cross to the front post from Ian Hunter was met by Jordan Blyth whose flick goalwards cleared the defenders and keeper and nestled in the far corner 2 - 0 a great start for the Planters.
The remainder of the half was pretty comfortable, the energy levels were high and Brantham were limited to one shot from distance in the whole of the first half.
The second half started in the same vein even with both sides cancelling each other out. On 55 minutes a heavy challenge outside the box ended with Jon Lovelock flattened and clutching his leg. After a couple of minutes of treatment a stretcher was called for and Jon left the field to be replaced by Tom Jeal hopefully it's not serious as we'll need him Saturday when we see the return of Porky and Darren Coe to Plantation Park.
The change saw Tom go to right back with Ships moving into the centre of defence, the Planters missed Jon immediately with more pressure being put on by Brantham. Adam Bennett had spent the whole game in a battle with his opposite number 8 D Grimwood who was doing everything he could to bully Adam. Benno found himself in the book for what was a pretty inoquios challenge but he was holding his ground and winning the battle against a player with far more experience.
On 65 minutes Brantham were awarded a penalty when Tom Jeal made a good strong block but left his leg in which the forward tumbled over in the box. Mayhew the Brantham number 9 slotted the spot kick past Ben Nower 2 - 1
Brantham began to press strongly having got back into the game. On Saturday The yellows got back into the game and lead two, one as we neared the end of the but we let 10 man Haverhill get the draw. The Planters were dealing reasonably well with the Brantham onsurge, a ball played down the left wing was picked up by Nathan Howard who drove into the box played the ball in to Jamie George who ran along the byline and beat the keeper with ease. 3 - 1 to the Planters on 83 minutes they saw the game out well. An excellent result well done boys!!!
Great to see the front men making an impact, Gavin Lemmon has settled well into the side and brings real bite and fight into the midfield.
