What is Australian Football?

Australian football combines the kicking skills of football with the full contact tackling of rugby. There are similarities with Gaelic Football as you cannot throw the ball you must hit it with your hand. The aim of the game is to score a goal by kicking the ball between the two goal posts, this will earn the team 6 points. There are additional posts either side of the goal posts, these are the ‘behind’ posts. If a ball is kicked between these posts the scoring team gets only 1 point.

Who can play Australian Football in Nottingham?

Men and women over the age of 16 can train and play for the Nottingham Scorpions. You just need a pair of boots, a mouth guard and a desire to challenge yourself and try something new.

Who do the Nottingham Scorpions play against?

The men’s team participate in the Central, Northern England League and play teams from Wolverhampton, Manchester and Huddersfield.

The women's team participate in the SEWARFL league and play teams from Cardiff, Sussex and Bristol. The women's team and reigning champions and have qualified for the AFL Europe Champions league for the last 3 tournaments.

Both teams play friendly fixtures against teams from London and university teams such as the University of Birmingham and participate in various tournaments throughout the year including the Haggis Cup in Glasgow.

When and where do the Nottingham Scorpions train?

The Nottingham Scorpions train and play home fixtures at Moderns Rugby Club, Main Road, Wilford, NG11 7AA. We train on a Thursday evening and a Saturday morning with some of the session being mixed drills and some separate to allow the men’s and women’s teams to work on team specific drills.

Can you represent your country in AFL?

Many Scorpions players have represented both England and Great Britain and have achieved great success playing at the Euro Cup in Europe and the International Cup in Australia. Being a minority sport the pathway is relatively short and representing you country is a very real possibility for talented players new to the sport.

Do the Nottingham Scorpions have a social side to the club?

The Nottingham Scorpions are a very sociable club, we have regular social events such as nights out, weekend trips and we are always keen for a social drink after training.

What are the aims of the Nottingham Scorpions?

Everyone involved with the club is passionate about growing the game in the East Midlands, increasing participation and helping more people experience this amazing sport! If you want to get involved we are looking for volunteers as well as players to help support the club in different ways.
