Novos U15's away at Ponteland

by Andrew Sims

Ponteland forward power too strong for Novos

With several regular players missing, Novos were under pressure from the start against a physical Ponteland side. Within 5 minutes the home side registered two tries as their forwards dominated at the breakdown and forced a series of turnovers at rucks.

After weathering the initial storm Novos began to compete and the game became more even as Novos forwards increased their work rate. But the visitors were still under pressure and when a defensive clearance kick from their in-goal area failed to find touch, Ponteland set up a series of forward drives for their third try.

After 27 minutes, Novos registered the outstanding try of the game. A strong tackle from Will B on half way forced a knock-on; Novos played the advantage as Peter claimed the loose ball and released the back line who fed Liam M. The winger beat his opposite number and outpaced the other defenders to score under the posts. Peter converted.

Just as Novos sensed an opportunity to get back into the game, Ponteland’s forwards rumbled though to register their fourth try on half time to go to the break leading 22-7.

The second half began similarly to the first with an early try from Ponteland as their backs worked the ball from left to right after an attacking line out.

Novos continued to work hard and the work rate of Will B, combined with the centre combination of Angus and Sean made some impact, but the visitors could not manage any more points, and as Novos’ forwards tired, the home side ran in five further tries, all due to forward pressure.

A tough day for Novos, with several regulars missing and others forced to play out of position. But it was good match experience for some, and there was a good attitude from all.

Novos: Olly; Liam M, Sean, Angus, Jonny; Matthew, Peter; Anis, Luke, Dan, Will B, Jack, James, Bryn, Niall. Replacements: Bradley, Will S, Joe D.

Tries: Liam M (27’). Conversions: Peter (27’).
