RGS Runners Up In Daily Mail Cup final
RGS 10 - Whitgift 34 Report from RGS site
Last Wednesday, at the crack of dawn, 400 students, parents, Old Novocastrians and staff, set out on a fleet of buses to support the RGS 1st XV who were due to play in the final of the RFU Daily Mail U18 National Rugby Finals, at Twickenham. RGS were the underdogs but gave a fine account of themselves against very strong opposition from Whitgift School from Croydon. The final score, 34:10 to the Londoners, didn't reflect the excitement of the game, both teams having a fair share of the ball and producing exciting chances. A hat trick of tries from one of Whitgift's 4 England players, was answered late in the game by our own England star, Joel Hodgson. RGS gave their all in front of fantastic support from all those who went to Twickenham to cheer them on. Despite the disappointing result, the effort of the RGS players on the pitch was matched by their sporting behaviour in applauding Whitgift who are worthy champions. Arriving home in the early hours of the morning, all agreed that this had been a special day in the life of the school. Well done to all those involved in taking the team so far in the competition, and for making this a day to remember.
