Preparing for next season (part 1)

It's a big change next season as we lose the tags and prepare for contact rugby!

Generally speaking this is the stage in the children's rugby progression that they have been looking forward to for 3 years, and parents have been dreading for about the same time!

The rules we play next season are a smooth progression from this year. The pitches get slightly bigger and we play with 7 players, but the major change is the swapping of the 'TAG' for the 'TACKLE'.

What does TACKLE mean?
Simply put, the children will be looking to stop their opponents by bringing them to the ground, wrapping their arms around their lower body and using their body weight to pull them down. In the early stages grabbing hold of a player for 3 seconds will also constitute a tackle, even if they can't bring them to the floor.

Will it be SAFE?
Safety is a major focus for all the coaches, and this will continue to be the case next season. We will spend the first few weeks getting the children ready to tackle and be tackled, practising falling, keeping arms and legs in the right position.

The tackle will be introduced as a technical 'discipline' to be learnt, perfected and used appropriately. There isn't going to be a sudden degeneration to almighty pile-ups!

There will be a zero-tolerance approach to any behaviour that might be dangerous, and we appreciate your support with that. It's vital we teach the children the right skills AND attitude right from the very start.

When do we START?
Next season, and not a day before! We aren't allowed to do ANY contact training prior to next season. We may look to organise some TOUCH rugby games over the summer, but these simply replace the tag with a touch on the hips, and NOT a tackle.

Do we need and new EQUIPMENT?
Yes. Gumshields will be mandatory throughout next season, for training and matches. Anyone without a gumshield will NOT be allowed to play, and there will be no exceptions.

Gumshields cost from £2 to about £20 from Sports Direct, etc. Follow the instructions carefully to fit them to your child's mouth. From experience, you do get what you pay for with gumshields in terms of fit, comfort and longevity.

Most dentists will make you a custom gumshield to fit your child's mouth perfectly - these are by far the best option but can cost £40 or more. Some dentists have been known to do them for free - always worth asking!

Other equipment is allowed, but is not mandatory, whilst some equipment is NOT allowed.

Some children like to wear body armour (padded shirts worn under the playing shirt) or scrum caps (padded helmets). If wearing these make the children feel more comfortable and/or confident then by all means buy them, but they are NOT required.

Body armour comes in various shapes, sizes, styles and prices - ranging from around £15 to £40. Although buying online is fine I would encourage you to try on before you buy as the sizing varies enormously between manufacturers.

Equipment that might injure another player is NOT allowed. For example children cannot wear any 'hard' clothing such as shinpads. If in doubt, check whether the item has an IRB (International Rugby Board) approval mark, or event better - ask!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
