Eds win again
Barker Butts 20 - 28 Eds
Barkers Butts 20 Nuneaton Old Eds 28
This was a full-on action-packed match between 2 committed teams that were both determined to win. Barkers made the livelier start with fast and accurate rugby keeping the ball moving, The Eds’ scramble defence was tested until Barkers’ No9 dummied through to score under the posts: 7-0.
From the restart Barkers were throwing everything at the Eds, whose defence held up well. The pressure was relieved by No11 Jack Darlaston’s interception and kick to touch. Hatch stole the resultant lineout from Barkers and No15 Sam Southall made ground to set up a ruck in Barkers’ 22. Eds’ scrum-half Matt Fielder’s tap and go took him close and No3 Dave McAdam powered over for the try converted by No12 Matt Loveday: 7-7.
Shortly after, a line-out 15m from the home side’s line resulted in a controlled Eds’ drive to the line with No2 George Parker scoring: 7-14 after twenty minutes. Barkers came back with a penalty: 10-14. Eds’ No8 Ryan Hatch’s mid-field gallop took the Eds deep into Barker’s territory where they went through several phases for skipper and No7 Phil King touched down: 10-21.
The second half saw the Barkers’ in determined mood again with a fine try on their right-wing: 15-21. Stung into action, Eds responded immediately with Loveday’s (now at first-receiver) nicely-weighted pass putting Hatch through the defensive line to score: 15-28. For the fourth time Loveday converted.
Barkers were not deterred and, once more, scored in the right-hand corner: 20-28. For the remainder of the match good game management kept the Eds mostly in Barkers’ half. However, Barkers were always dangerous and looking for opportunities. This riveting match ended without further score and Barkers will feel unfortunate to come away with no league points in spite of their part in the game.
