FA Youth Cup - Boro 6 Hednesford Town 2
Preliminary Qualifying Round - Thursday 6th September 2018;
Luis Corcoran’s four goals headlined a resounding win, with Tyler Jones and Frank Goodyear notching a strike each to round-out the evening.
Boro’ had a let off as early as the fifth minute when a corner pinballed around the box before going wide. Bruce Tsinonis escaped down the left flank in the ninth minute and fired in a dangerous cross that neither Corcoran nor Jones could effectively connect with. In the 15th minute Connor Farmer was called in to action as Frank Goodyear whipped in a free kick from the left that the Hednesford keeper did well to block.
Jones broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Tsinonis set him away with a fantastic through ball, rounding the keeper and lashing the ball in to the empty net. Hednesford had an opportunity to level a couple of minutes later when Tom Nicholls’ header missed wide of the right post. Boro’ broke and Jones played in Corcoran to add the second and punish the missed opportunity.
In the 43rd minute Goodyear set up Vijay Seenath on the edge of the box but Farmer pushed the ball around the post, diving full stretch to deny the midfielder’s powerful strike. The first half came to a close with Boro’ in command, with a 2-0 lead.
Hednesford clawed their way back in to the game with Tom Wheeldon’s well-struck penalty, the spot kick coming just three minutes in to the second half. Seven minutes later Corcoran added his second, restoring Boro’s two goal advantage, coolly converting from the spot after Hednesford were penalised for a shirt pull in the box.
Corcoran secured his match ball with a hat-trick, scoring at the second attempt after Farmer had blocked his initial effort. The chance came on the counterattack as Seenath stroked the ball just out of reach of the last Hednesford defender.
Four minutes later and Goodyear added the fifth. Hednesford were becoming stretched and as gaps appeared in their back line Boro’ were comfortably stroking the ball around on the edge of the visitor’s box, Goodyear firing in to the bottom left hand corner. Corcoran hit the post just a few moments later as Boro’ took complete control.
Corcoran’s fourth was a clinical strike from the edge of the box, and he almost had a fifth shortly afterwards, curling Jones’ through-ball narrowly wide. There was a late consolation for Town as Joe Fenwick made a good save to deny Wheeldon but couldn’t get up quickly enough to save from Charlie Draw.
