Magpies snatch narrow victory at Liberty Way...
Nicky Eaden and his Boro’ side tasted defeat for the first time on Saturday afternoon as visiting Chorley earned a narrow 1-0 win at Liberty Way. Marcus Carver’s first half strike was the difference between two evenly matched sides in a game of few chances.
It could have different as early as the first minute when Scott Leather entered the Referee’s notebook for fouling Harry Panayiotou as he headed towards goal. Courtney Richards took the resulting free kick, shooting narrowly over.
Chorley saw a penalty appeal waved away shortly after the half hour mark as Elliot Newby went down in the box as he was about to pull the trigger. Lewis Freestone’s wicked cross from the left somehow found a way to Panayiotou in the middle but the former Leicester City forward couldn’t do anything with it as a Chorley defender blocked his way.
Moments later, on the stroke of half-time, Carver stole in in front of Danny Burns and got enough of a touch on a cross to see it trickle past Ross Etheridge an inside the post. It was the Magpie’s first effort on target.
Etheridge was called in to action a few times in the second half, making saves from Josh O’Keefe and Louis Almond. Eaden made several changes in an effort to find a way past Chorley’s stingy defence, and, though the Boro’ had plenty of pressure, they couldn’t hit the back of the net.
