Boston United 2-1 Nuneaton Borough

Boro’ just fall short of an equaliser against ten-man Pilgrims...

The hosts, who were looking to make it back-to-back wins after their comfortable 3-0 win at FC United of Manchester, were on top in the opening period of the game.

An effort from Harry Panayiotou was comfortably saved by the Boston stopper however Boro’ had the best chance to open the scoring through Kairo Mitchell whose shot from inside the box on the left on 14 minutes just went wide of the far post.

Boro’ struggled to create another clear-cut chance for the remainder of the half, and on the stroke of half time, the hosts took the lead through a long-ranged strike from Nathan Arnold after the ball luckily fell into his path from around 20 yards out.

Changes at half time saw youngster Michael Tweed introduced in place of Owain Jones and he looked to make an early impact but received a yellow card on 49 minutes.

A similar pattern to the first half saw a fair amount of pressure put onto the Boro’ goal but it was well-dealt with, before another change saw Courtney Richards replaced by Enoch Andoh.

Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse as Boston doubled their lead through Jonathan Wafula, who made an inside run into the box and was cleverly picked out by Nicky Walker, finishing sharply beyond Gray.

James Wesolowski was introduced in place of Mike Calveley in midfield, and on 78 minutes the game swung as Ashley Jackson was sent off for Boston United after a late and rash challenge on Michael Tweed.

Minutes later, Boro’ managed to get a goal back, their first of the season, thanks to substitute Andoh, who scored from close range with a ball cut back across the Boston United box from Obeng on the right, completely changing the momentum.

Andoh almost got his second, and an equaliser for Boro, on 86’ minutes, with his outside-the-foot effort going just past the top corner, then at the other end Boston saw a 30-yard effort at an empty goal hit the cross-bar after Louis Gray had rushed out his goal to deal with a goal-scoring opportunity seconds earlier.

Confusion over the amount of added time saw nearly seven minutes played from an intial three minutes indicated, but Boston were able to see out the result at The Jakemans Stadium.

Next up for Boro’ is a home game on Saturday the 18th August against Southport at Liberty Way as Boro’ go in search of their first win of the season.
