Spennymoor Town 3-1 Nuneaton Borough
Nuneaton Borough fell to a 3-1 defeat in an entertaining encounter at Spennymoor Town’s Brewery Field.
Dior Angus scored from the spot but goals from Glen Taylor, Robert Ramshaw and Andrew Johnson handed the hosts victory as they remained in the playoff places whilst Boro’ languish at the opposite end of the table.
Glen Taylor gave the hosts a dream start, converting a penalty in the second minute after going down under Jon Onyeaka’s challenge. Angus responded with a coolly taken spot-kick of his own just two minutes later after Curtis Obeng was cut down in the box.
The match settled down for a period but was reignited by Boro’ claims that Ramshaw had used his elbow in a challenge with Angus, Courtney Richards introduced himself to Ramshaw a few moments later and was booked for his robust challenge.
Adam McGurk and Carl Baker both had good chances to fire Boro’ in to the lead but both of their efforts were saved whilst Cam Belford made a couple of good saves of his own at the other end to keep the sides level. The Moors regained the lead on the stroke of half-time as Danny Burns and Miles Addison both lost their feet and Ramshaw was free to slot past Belford in first half stoppage time.
Spennymoor added to their lead 12 minutes in to the second half with a slick passing move that set Andrew Johnson through on goal to tuck his effort past Belford. Eaden made an immediate change, bringing on Devon Kelly-Evans to replace Jon Onyeaka and changing to four at the back. Boro’ responded by dominating the ensuing period and probably should have pulled one back when Kelly-Evans headed across goal but Angus couldn’t keep his header down.
Boro’ had the better of the final half an hour but though they created chances they couldn’t pull a goal back. There was plenty for Eaden to be encouraged about as Nuneaton gave their most promising attacking performance of the season. Next up are Brackley Town in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying round. The match is a 15:00 kick-off at Liberty Way on Saturday the 22nd of September.
