Nuneaton Borough 1 FC United of Manchester 0
The Boro' secured their second win of the season thanks to an Enoch Andoh goal in the 85th minute of a tight contest at home to FC United of Manchester.
With his squad decimated by injuries and suspensions, Nicky Eaden was forced to make several changes, including naming Assistant Manager Lee Fowler on the bench.
Boro’ dominated the early exchanges with shots coming from Enoch Andoh, Dior Angus and Adam McGurk, the efforts failed to trouble David Carnell though and Nuneaton couldn’t take advantage of the superior share of possession.
Debutant Rhys Davies received an early booking as he filled in at left-back for the injured Lewis Freestone. Boro’ had the ball in the back of the net in the 32nd minute but Angus’ goal was ruled out as Andoh had already been flagged offside before he delivered the ball.
Mike Calveley will feel that he should have done better just before the hour mark when Carnell dived full-stretch to deny a McGurk free kick. Calveley followed in but couldn’t keep his effort on target and flashed his effort wide.
FC United should have taken the lead in the 62nd minute when Michael O’Donohue was free in front of goal but put his header over the bar. McGurk played a throughball to heavily when looking for Theo Wharton, who had done well to win possession deep in the opponent’s half.
The goal, when it did come, was scrappy, FC United failed to clear a set-piece, with a defensive header going straight up in to the air in front of Carnell. Angus and Andoh boxed the keeper out, with Dior getting a touch that Andoh was able to spin on to and fire in to the bottom corner.
There were a few nervy moments in the dying minutes as the visitors flung everything at the Boro’ in a desperate attempt to find an equaliser. Eaden’s men hung on though and the Manager will now have difficult decisions to make as Carl Baker, Danny Burns and James Wesolowski all figure to be fit and Harry Panayiotou returns from suspension before jetting off with St. Kitts and Nevis. York City are the visitors on Tuesday evening for a 19:45 kick-off.
