Match Report
On a cold and frosty morning, we firstly played against Notts Paviours B team, who we beat 8 tries to 0, with tries from Jamie (2), Ben, Sid (2), Herbie, Jed and Oliver. We ran very well with the ball, quite a few passes, and clearly wanted the ball more than the opposition. We won the ball well at the breakdown, driving over well, but Paviours tackling let them down.
We then took on a much stronger Notts Paviours A team, who were a well drilled side, a stark contrast to their B team. However, we tackled extremely well, but their passing down the line created try scoring opportunities that we had not confronted before. We had several chances to score, but their tackling was excellent. Apart from two easy tries where we were caught half asleep, we contested very well, and did not give up. We gave the ball away too easily in the ruck and maul, and the opposition were quick to take advantage. But, compared to the first game against their B team, we were taken somewhat by surprise, and had to rally hard to compete. As the game went on, our confidence returned but to no avail.
The final game against the home side, West Bridgeford, was an absolute cracker. The sides were evenly matched, and both sides made some fantastic runs. With 2 tries from Jamie and one bulldozing run straight through the middle by Herbie (new nickname, The Dodgem!), we were leading until the last move of the game when their winger ran in a late try. The final score, 3 – 3, was a fair result, but our determination to win the ball in the open gave us some good possession, and more noticeably, our tackling was ferocious. Had we not tackled so well, we would have definitely lost the game. The scrum, Ben, Mylo and Herbie, really got stuck in up front, and Jed and Sid worked well together at scrum half and fly half. The two centres, Jamie and Oliver, attacked and defended well. George Savage made some brilliant runs, and both Thomas and George Jenkins played some great rugby on the wings.
Buck
On the home front, the Spitfires had a very successful training session. Off-loading in contact and tackling were the key skills being coached today, before appling these in the match sessions. New boys Jake, Ben and Noah are all showing super potential, picking up skills at ease.
During the matches, George W, seth and Brady were electric scoring plenty of tries in the process. Jamie B, Jack F and George L all tackled fiercely, and Oliver H and Noah M yet again showed their running skills and Ben H, on loan with the Spitfires was his usual energetic self! Oadby Wyggs next week....bring it on!
