Oban CC vs Carradale
Oban lose to Argyll rivals Carradale
Oban hosted their Argyll rivals Carradale for a match at Taynuilt on Sunday 28th June and lost out narrowly in a tight game by 14 runs.
Carradale won the toss and decided to bat first on a wicket that was expected to be difficult to score on later in the day, following some heavy overnight rain. Andrew Leach took an early wicket for Oban but Chris Marriott started to take advantage of some uncharacteristically poor Oban bowling to help himself to some easy boundaries and he passed 50 as Carradale's total moved into 3 figures. Allan Laycock and Neill Belshaw pegged the vistors back late in the innings, as wickets started to fall, but a total of 175 for 7 from their 40 overs was a challenging total and this was owed principally to Chris Marriott who made 86.
In reply, Oban began well but the loss of wickets at crucial stages was to ultimately undermine their run chase. Andrew Leach, Mark Boyce and Allan Laycock were all well set but lost their wickets just when they looked to have put Oban in a winning position. Ronnie Kelly, who opened the innings, played well but soon found himself running out of partners as wickets fell regularly at the other end. Jack Whiteley made a quick 15 but was bowled by Aidan Keogh and Oban found themselves needing to score 15 from the last over to win the game and this proved a step too far, with Kelly finding himself out of partners as he was left 52 not out and Oban 14 runs short of their target.
