History

It was a Wednesday night in June 2006 when for the first time ever twenty five girls turned up to Old Dunstonian Sports ground for rugby practice. No it wasn't a special mens back's session, but the Old Dunstonian Ladies first ever training session. The turn out was great and the air was full of excitment (or maybe nerves) as many of those there couldn't catch, several couldn't pass and a few had never even watched a rugby match. All bar 3 girls there that night had never played before (or indeed thought about playing for that matter!) Everyone was wondering what they had let themselves in for, none more than coach Lee Smith who had agreed to try and turn this bunch of novice girlie girls into a smooth running competitive team!

Yet despite some rabbit in the headlight expressions and a few headless chicken moments in the beggining the night described above was the start of something big in Ladies rugby. The team quickly came together, potential was unearthed, skills were learnt, a love of rugby, mud and smashing into people was discovered and above all a lot of fun was had. Lou Dennis, who dreamt up this seamingly daft idea to start up a Ladies rugby team from scratch with the thought of "I want to play on that pitch", never imagined how quickly it would build up. In September 2006 the OD Ladies played their first match and went on to win 8 out of 12 of the friendlies organised that season that allowed us to qualify for the league the following September.
