Our founder member and club president Des Pastore, 97, has sadly passed away at 7.30 am this morning, Friday 13th.
On a sad day for the club, our venerable president and founder has died after a short illness. A fixture at the club every Saturday until very recently, and who only last donned his gold shorts to play a few years ago at 93 years of age, Des will be missed by all Old Bedians, past and present.
Always forthright in his opinions, holding others to his own very high standards, any player complimented by Des knew he must have had a great game.
Des was an excellent player himself, and held the record for 68 tries scored in a season at Sale RUFC in his pre-Bedians days, a record that still exists to this day.
All Bedians playing this weekend (past or present) should give Des a thought before kick off, and play with the commitment Des himself would have demanded.
It's no exaggeration to say that there would not be an Old Bedians RUFC without Des's efforts, both in the foundation of the club in 1954 and its running these past 58 years.
Des was awarded an MBE in 2006 for services to sport.
Please think of Des's family at this time.
Rest in Peace.
UPDATE: Funeral arrangements have now been confirmed. It will take place next Thursday 26 January at Manchester Crematorium, Southern Cemetery at 12 noon, and afterwards at Old Bedians RUFC.
