OBRFC 1st XV 27-21 Old Amplefordians
The Old Blues' 1st XV kick off the season with a great win!
That time of the year is upon us again, the return of the mighty Blue’s in pursuit of more silverware in what hopes to be another successful season. New league, new season and first game up was away at Old Amplefordians. The sight of the perfectly groomed 1st team pitch at Motspur Park was too intimidating for the home team and thus banished us to the overgrown jungle that lay ahead on the 2nd team pitch.
The first 10 minutes saw a lot of back and fourths until the blues gained some momentum and camped within the oppositions 22 for an extended period. Some slick hands from the new backline saw debutant Lewis dancing his way over the try line only to drop the ball upon grounding (a very popular moment for Dick of the Day). Continued pressure saw the Blues secure the first points of the game, a penalty slotted by Mark B. Unhappy with just the 3 points, the Blue’s immediately responded and were straight back in the oppositions half. A solid scrum from the pack laid the foundations for Mark Davey to bulldoze his way through 3 or 4 players to score under the posts – an easy conversion was added. Old Amplefordians responded strongly, pushing the Blues deep into the rough of their own 22, eventually leading to the opposition’s first try. Apparently the ref didn’t see the centre knock the ball on into Mark’s hands. Score 10 -7. A few injuries saw a re shuffle in the back line, and Nick Fox was in at 10 with immediate impact. Mark B and Nick carved their way through the majority of Old A’s backline with Nick elegantly diving under the posts – another simple conversion. 17-7. With only a couple of minutes before half time, the Blue’s tried to keep the opposition out, but a solid line from their winger saw them scrape in a try before half time. Half time score – 17-14.
Buster provided some inspirational words at half time, to set the boys up for another strong half. The first 10 minutes was another power struggle until an inside ball to Lewis on the Blue’s on 10m line saw him charge through the backline and offload to Leo who ran half the pitch to score under the posts. Score 24-14. Camped deep in the oppo’s 22 Max (also on debut and our youngest player) decided to take on the pack in a bust up that included most of the team, except Calvin who ran in the other direction. Hareef, our third debutant, made an immediate impact with a sublime turnover on our own 22, to squash the momentum the opposition had been building. 10 minutes to go, and some poor defending led to an easy try for the Old Amplefordians. Score, 24-21. With 5 to go, another penalty was added to take the Blue’s to a 6 point lead. The Blue’s held off well and with time up, Calvin spooned a kick backwards into our own try line in an attempt to give Old A’s one final chance. Luckily Mark B was there to clean up and booted the ball out. Final Score 27-21.
Man of the Match: Pete Rosier.
