Old Brentwoods U13s away at Maldon RFC
What a Match!
Old Brentwoods Acorns went to Maldon RFC for their waterfall cup semi-final.
As always the Old Brentwood side started well and through some great phases managed to get close to the Maldon line but without converting the pressure into points. Maldon were also able to get the ball out wide and their passing and support game was very strong and they ran in 4 well worked tries before half time. The Acorns had managed one try, but left a few out there. However at half time they knew what to do and the second half was a different game, with the Old Brentwoods defence staying out wide, the forwards also started to control possession and this resulted in two more well supported tries. The Old Brentwoods scrum was really working well with the front row particularly strong and this resulted in several wins against the head. Maldon did get one more score to widen the deficit again and at 5 tries to 3 you could be forgiven for thinking it was over, but the OBs side thrive on the last quarter of the match and set about making good that deficit, 5-4, then a huge score to draw level at 5-5, saw an even louder response when the Old Brentwoods crossed the line to take the lead with about a minute to go. From the kick off the OBs side defended well, but eventually gave up a penalty, this was taken quickly and wave after wave of runs by Maldon were repelled until after spilling it, the referee took them back for another penalty for not being 10m. This was taken and unfortunately for the Acorns, they hadn't reacted and allowed Maldon an overlap which they used well. The final score was 6 tries apiece and a fantastic game of rugby for players, officials and spectators.
